Last week’s shooting in a luxury apartment building in the NoMa area of Washington, D.C. really shook me, especially because it happened in a place people usually think of as safe and upscale. Police found a man shot inside the building, and according to neighbors, several people were seen running out right after the gunfire. What makes it even more unsettling is that this was the third killing in just a few weeks, even though officials keep saying the city’s homicide rate is generally going down. As someone who lives in the area, it feels strange to see these kinds of incidents happening so close to places that look polished and newly developed. It’s a reminder that the city still struggles with pockets of violence, even in neighborhoods that look peaceful from the outside.
